MASJID-E-NABVI

(Prophet’s Mosque)

  • 30″ X 40″

  • Madinah, Saudi Arab
    622 AD

Al-Masjid an-Nabawī (‘The Prophetic Mosque’), is a mosque built by the last Islamic prophet Muhammad in the city of Medina in the Al Madinah Province of Saudi Arabia. It was the second mosque built by Prophet Muhammad in Medina, after Masjid Quba’a, and is now one of the largest mosques in the world. It is the second holiest site in Islam, after the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca.

The land of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi belonged to two young orphans, Sahl and Suhayl, and when they came to know that Muhammad wished to acquire their land for the purposes of erecting a mosque, they went to the Prophet and offered the land to him as a gift; the Prophet insisted on paying a price for the land because they were orphaned children. The price agreed upon was paid by Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, who thus became the endower or donor of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi on behalf of, or in favor of, Prophet Muhammad.  Al-Ansari also accommodated Muhammad upon his arrival at Madinah in 622.

Prophet Muhammad shared in the construction of the mosque. Originally an open-air building, the mosque served as a community center, a court of law, and a religious school. There was a raised platform or pulpit (minbar) for the people who taught the Quran and for Prophet Muhammad to give the Friday sermon (khutbah). Subsequent Islamic rulers greatly expanded and decorated the mosque, naming its walls, doors, and minarets after themselves and their forefathers.

Seim Reap, Cambodia

  • 36″ X 36″

Ta Prohm is the modern name of the temple at Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely and originally called Rajavihara.

Located approximately one kilometer east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university.

Unlike most Angkor temples, Ta Prohm has been left in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor’s most popular temples with visitors.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Bahawalpur, Pakistan

14th Century

Uch is famous for the tombs of its saints, the most exquisite ruins in Pakistan. Of these the most aesthetically pleasing is the blue and white tiled Tomb of Bibi Jawindi (d. 1403), a lady famous for her piety. The proportions and coloring of the tomb are lovely, even though 200 or so years ago it was partly destroyed in a flood. Built-in 1498, it features two octagonal tiers surmounted by a white dome which are very similar in design to the earlier Rukn-e-Alam Tomb in Multan. The two ruined tombs of Bahawal Halim and Ustad Ladlastand in the same graveyard. The tomb of Jalaluddin Surkh Posh Bukhari is right beside the tomb of Bibi Jawindi. It is an amazing tomb in Uch Sharif (Bahawalpur) in South Punjab.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

  • Acrylic on Canvas
  • Original

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque  is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. The largest mosque in the country, it is the key place of worship for daily prayers.

The mosque is large enough to accommodate over 40,100 worshippers, while the main prayer hall can hold over 7,000. There are two smaller prayer halls, with a capacity of 1,500 each, one of which is the women’s prayer hall.

The Grand Mosque was constructed between 1994 and 2007. The building complex measures approximately 290 by 420 m (950 by 1,380 ft), covering an area of more than 12 hectares (30 acres), excluding exterior landscaping and vehicle parking. The main axis of the building is rotated about 12° south of true west, aligning it in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The project was launched by the late president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with the historical and modern values of architecture and art.  In 2004, Sheikh Zayed died and was buried in the courtyard of the mosque.
